He’s coming

Poem Twenty five

The slow, predatory creeping of the black dog goes unnoticed,

everyone ignores his prowling and is deaf to his howling,

everyone except me.

The pad of his paws, the scrape of his long nails, his panting,

he’s gaining on me now, and all the while,

the world is sound asleep.

Constrained and bound,
Held at ransom.

Every decision governed,
Free will removed,
Choices stolen.

It’s ‘for the best’
‘The only way’
‘My best chance’

I’m suffocating,
Rejecting the truth.

And in time I breathe,
The air is clear,
The chains unwind.
